In this paper, the character formulae of all finite-dimensional irreducible modules of the orthosymplectic Lie superalgebra \(\mathfrak{osp}(n| 2)\) are completely determined in terms of the characters of generalized Verma modules. Any irreducible \(\mathfrak{ osp}(n| 2)\)-module \(L_\lambda\) with highest weight \(\lambda\) is studied by induction via the irreducible components of a tensor module \(L_\mu\otimes L_\delta\), where \(L_\mu\) is a known irreducible \(\mathfrak{osp}(n| 2)\)-module and \(L_\delta\cong\mathbb C^{n| 2}\) is the natural \(\mathfrak{osp}(n| 2)\)-module. The character of the module \(L_\mu\otimes L_\delta\) is computed by expressing the character of \(L_\mu\) by means of those of generalized Verma modules. An analogue of Kostant's \(\mathfrak u\)-cohomology is used to construct generalized Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials \textit{V. Serganova} [Sel. Math., New Ser. 2, No. 4, 607--651 (1996; Zbl 0881.17005)] for finite-dimensional irreducible \(\mathfrak{osp}(n| 2)\)-modules and to give an explicit expression of the character of the trivial \(\mathfrak{osp}(n| 2)\)-module \(L_0\cong\mathbb C\) (hence a denominator identity) in terms of the characters of generalized Verma modules. In addition, the irreducible decomposition of the tensor module \(L_\lambda\otimes L_\delta\) is obtained as a byproduct of the study of this module.
