Let \(1<p<\infty\) and \(\alpha>0\). Given any bounded operator \(A\) on the standard Bergman space \(L_a^p({\mathbb B}_n,dv)\) of the unit ball \({\mathbb B}_n\) in \({\mathbb C}^n\) or on the Fock space \(F_\alpha^p\), let \(B(A)\) be its Berezin transform in the corresponding space. \textit{D. Suárez} [Indiana Univ. Math. J. 56, No. 5, 2185--2232 (2007; Zbl 1131.47024)] proved that a bounded operator \(A\) on \(L_a^p({\mathbb B}_n,dv)\) is compact if and only if \(A\) is in the norm closure of the algebra generated by Toeplitz operators and \(B(A)\) vanishes on the boundary \(\partial{\mathbb B}_n\). The main result of the present paper says that a similar criterion holds also for \(F_\alpha^p\): a bounded operator \(A\) on \(F_\alpha^p\) is compact if and only if it belongs the norm closure of the algebra generated by Toeplitz operators and its Berezin transform \(B(A)\) vanishes at infinity. The basic strategy of the proofs in both papers is the same, however, the details of the proofs are often considerably different.
