Let \(H\) be a semisimple Hopf algebra over an algebraically closed field of characteristic \(0\), with normalized two-sided integral \(\Lambda\). Let \(\tau\) be a Hopf algebra automorphism of \(H\), and assume that \(\tau^m\) is the identity. For an \(H\)-module \(V\), with corresponding character \(\chi\), the \(m\)-th twisted Frobenius-Schur indicator of \(\chi\) is defined by the formula \[ \nu_m(\chi,\tau)=\chi(\Lambda_{(1)}\tau(\Lambda_{(2)})\cdots\tau^{m-1}(\Lambda_{(m)})). \] In the case where \(\tau\) is the identity, we recover the Frobenius-Schur indicator introduced by \textit{V. Linchenko} and \textit{S. Montgomery}, [Algebr. Represent. Theory 3, No. 4, 347-355 (2000; Zbl 0971.16018)]. In the case where \(H=kG\) is a group algebra, we recover the twisted Frobenius-Schur indicator introduced by \textit{D. Bump} and \textit{D. Ginzburg}, [J. Algebra 278, No. 1, 294-313 (2004; Zbl 1053.20006)]. The main results of the paper are the following. \(\nu_m(\chi,\tau)\) can be realized as the trace of an endomorphism of order \(m\) (Theorem 3.5). The second twisted Frobenius-Schur indicator is always an element of \(\{-1,0,1\}\), and it can be characterized when it amounts of each of these three values (Theorem 4.3). Finally, an explicit formula for the twisted Frobenius-Schur indicator of the regular representation is given, see Theorem 5.1.
