Let \((M,H)\) be a hypercomplex manifold, \(H= (J_1,J_2,J_3)\) being a triple of (integrable) complex structures such that, for any cyclic permutation \((\alpha,\beta,\gamma)\) of \(\{1,2,3\}\) one has \(J_\alpha= J_\beta\circ J_\gamma= -J_\gamma\circ J_\beta\). Then \(M\) admits a neutral metric \(g\) which is Hermitian with respect to \(J_1\) and anti-Hermitian with respect to \(J_2\), \(J_3\). Briefly, one says that \((H, g)\) is a hypercomplex \(HN\)-metric structure. Such a structure is called hyper-Kähler if each \(J_\alpha\) is parallel with respect to the Levi-Cività connection \(\nabla\) of \((M, g)\). In this paper the author gives a detailed description of invariant hypercomplex \(HN\)-metric structures on a 4-dimensional simply connected Lie group \(G\). It is known that any hypercomplex structure on the Lie algebra \(g\) of \(G\) induces an invariant hypercomplex structure on \(G\) by left translations. Moreover, with any structure \(H\) on \(g\) is associated a pseudo-Euclidean metric \(g\) with neutral signature, so that \((H,g)\) is a hypercomplex \(HN\)-metric structure on \(g\). On the other hand, a classification theorem, states the existence of five types of 4-dimensional Lie algebras admitting a (integrable) hypercomplex structure. So, the author considers a hypercomplex structure \(H\) in one of the Lie algebras mentioned, the Kähler 2-form \(g_1\) associated with \((H,g)\) and the neutral metrics \(g_2\), \(g_3\). A detailed study of the covariant derivatives \(\nabla g_\alpha\), \(\alpha\in \{1,2,3\}\), allows to specify the Lee forms and then the type of the structure. In particular, the author explicitly describes the hypercomplex \(HN\)-structures that are conformally equivalent to a hyper-Kähler one. The Lie groups supporting these structures are the complex hyperbolic space \(\mathbb C\mathbb H^2\) and the affine motion group of \(\mathbb C\).
