An almost Hermitian structure \((g,J,\omega)\) on a smooth manifold \(M\) is called nearly Kähler if \((\nabla_XJ)X=0\) and strictly nearly Kähler if, in addition, \(\nabla_XJ\neq 0\). Nearly Kähler structures are one of the sixteen classes of almost Hermitian structures studied by Gray and Hervella. According to [\textit{P.-A. Nagy}, Asian J. Math. 6, No. 3, 481--504 (2002; Zbl 1041.53021)], a compact simply connected nearly Kähler manifold is isometric to a Riemannian product \(M_1\times\dots\times M_k\) where \(M_i\) is a nearly Kähler manifold from the following list: Kähler, naturally reductive 3-symmetric spaces, twistor spaces of compact quaternionic Kähler manifolds with positive scalar curvature and nearly Kähler 6-manifolds. The almost complex structure \(J\) of a strictly nearly Kähler 6-manifold \(M\) is never integrable. One can however consider an almost complex structure on \(M\) which is only compatible with \(\omega\) and ask whether it is integrable. The paper under review gives a negative answer to this question and gives some applications to the description of almost complex structures on the sphere \(S^6\).
