The authors show that a number of identities for a Lie ideal that involve (anti-) commutators and \((\alpha,\beta)\)-derivations force the Lie ideal to be central. Let \(R\) denote a 2-torsion free ring with involution * that is *-prime, has center \(Z(R)\), automorphisms \(\alpha\) and \(\beta\) that commute with *, and square-closed Lie ideal \(L=L^*\). For \(F,d\in\mathrm{End}((R, +)))\) with \(d\neq 0\), call \((F,d)\) a generalized \((\alpha,\beta)\)-derivation of \(R\) if for all \(x,y\in R\), \(F(xy)=F(x)\alpha(y)+\beta(x)d(y)\) and \(d(xy)=d(x)\alpha(y)+\beta(x)d(y)\). As usual, set \([x,y]=xy-yx\) and \(x\circ y=xy+yx\). Given \((F,d)\) and \((G,g)\), generalized \((\alpha,\beta)\)-derivations of \(R\), the authors show that \(L\subseteq Z(R)\) if any of the following identities holds for \(L\): \(F(A)=\alpha(B)\) for \(A,B\in\{[X,Y],X\circ Y\}\); \(F(XY)=\pm\alpha(XY)\); \(d(X)F(Y)=\pm\alpha(XY)\); \(F(X)\alpha(X)=\pm\beta(X)F(X)\); \(F([X,Y])=G(X)\alpha(Y)-\beta(Y)G(X)\); \(F(X\circ Y)=G(X)\alpha(Y)+\beta(Y)G(X)\). -- For two of the theorems in the paper the authors say that the conclusion that \(L\subseteq Z(R)\) holds when either \(F\) (or \(G\)) \(=0\) or \(d\neq 0\). However the hypotheses in all of the theorems in the paper assume to start with that \(d\neq 0\).
