The authors define the concept of a Hopf covering of a coradically graded pointed Hopf algebra. A universal Hopf covering is one that is universal among Hopf coverings of \(A\). If \(V\) is a link indecomposable Yetter-Drinfeld module over a group \(G\), and \(B(V)\) is the associated Nichols algebra, the (universal) Hopf coverings of the bosonization \(B(V)\#kG\) are described using a universal covering group of the coalgebra \(B(V)\). If \(B(V)\) is a Nichols algebra with a full set of quadratic relations, a universal coalgebra covering of \(B(V)\) is described in terms of the corresponding rack. Examples are given, related to path coalgebras, Fomin-Kirillov algebras, and certain finite dimensional Nichols algebras associated to racks.
