The authors extend the Paley-Wiener transform for Riemannian symmetric spaces to the special class of infinite-dimensional symmetric spaces. This class consists of limits of symmetric spaces. To define these limits the authors introduce the notion of prolongation of symmetric spaces. Roughly speaking, \(M\) is a prolongation of \(N\) if \(N\) is contained in \(M\) ``in the simplest possible way''. For example \(\mathrm{SU}(\ell+1)\) sits in \(\mathrm{SU}(k+1),\) \(k>\ell,\) as an upper-hand corner.
