The authors study quadratic homogeneous perturbations of a three-dimensional May-Leonard system. It is shown that there are perturbed systems having exactly one or two limit cycles bifurcating from the periodic orbits of the May-Leonard system. This is proved by estimating the number of zeros of first and second order Melnikov functions.
