Over any ring \(R\), the class \(Flat\) of flat \(R\)-modules is (pre)covering. Thus it makes sense to consider the right derived functors \(\mathrm{Fext}^i_R(-,N)\) of \(\mathrm{Hom}_R(-,N)\) w.r.t.~the class \(Flat\). It is natural to ask if there exists a preenveloping class \(Q\) of \(R\)-modules such that \(\mathrm{Fext}^i_R(M,N)\) can also be computed as the \(i^{\text{th}}\) right derived functor of \(\mathrm{Hom}_R(M,-)\), w.r.t.~the class \(Q\), evaluated on \(N\). In other words, does there exist a preenveloping class \(Q\) such that the functor \(\mathrm{Hom}_R(-,-)\) is right balanced on \(Flat \times Q\)\,? The author shows that this question has a negative answer if \(R\) commutative and noetherian but not artinian. This is a very satisfying result, since the question clearly has a positive answer over a commutative artinian ring. Indeed, in this case every flat module is projective, and one can therefor take \(Q\) to be the class of injective modules.
