The Fell topology \(\tau_F\) is a topology on the set \(CL(X)\) of all closed subsets of a given topological space \(X\). It is generated by open sets of the form \[ \{A\in CL(X)| A\cap U \not=\phi \} \] and \[ \{A\in CL(X)| A\cap K=\phi \}, \] where \(U\) is an open subset of \(X\) and \(K\) is compact. The author proves that if \(X\) is a \(T_2\) topological space which contains an uncountable closed discrete subset, the spaces \(\omega_1\), \(\omega_1+1\) and \(\omega_1\times (\omega_1+1)\) can be embedded into \((CL(X), \tau_F)\) as closed subsets. These results are then used to give conditions under which the hyperspace \(CL(X)\) of a metric space endowed with the Wijsman topology contains a closed copy of \(\omega_1\times (\omega_1+1)\).
