The authors present a new proof for a certain Almgren partial regularity theorem for area minimizing currents in a Riemannian manifold. They obtain ``a new a-priori estimate on the excess measure of an area minimizing current, together with several statements concerning approximations with Lipschitz multiple valued graphs.'' The following result is proved. Theorem 1.1. Let \(\Sigma \subset \mathbb{R}^{m+n}\) be a \(C^{3,\varepsilon_0}\) submanifold for some \(\varepsilon_0>0\) and \(T\) an \(m\)-dimensional area minimizing integral current in \(\Sigma\). Then, there is a closed set Sing\((T)\) of Hausdorff dimension at most \(m-2\) such that \(T\) is a \(C^{3,\varepsilon_0}\) embedded submanifold in \(\Sigma \setminus (spt(\partial T) \cup Sing(T))\). This theorem was first proved by \textit{F. J. Almgren jun.} [Almgren's big regularity paper. \(Q\)-valued functions minimizing Dirichlet's integral and the regularity of area-minimizing rectifiable currents up to codimension 2. Edited by V. Scheffer and Jean E. Taylor. Singapore: World Scientific (2000; Zbl 0985.49001)], assuming slighty better regularity of \(\Sigma\). The present proof is much shorter and introduces some new ideas and some new results which could be useful tools for further investigations. The most important contribution of the authors is the construction of the so-called center manifold obtaining some simpler and shorter proofs and better results.
