Let \(X\) and \(Y\) be Banach spaces, let \(Y'\) be the dual of \(Y\), and let \(\mathcal A_u(X;Y)\) be the Banach space of holomorphic functions in the open unit ball of \(X\) which are uniformly continuous in the closed unit ball of \(X\), endowed with the supremum norm. The Bishop-Phelps theorem asserts that the bounded linear functionals on \(X\) that attain their norm are norm dense in the dual space of \(X\). Even if this result does not extend to vector valued linear operators, \textit{J. Lindenstrauss} [Isr. J. Math. 1, 139--148 (1963; Zbl 0127.06704)] proved that the set of bounded linear operators between \(X\) and \(Y\) whose bitransposes are norm attaining is dense in the space of all operators. This paper is mainly concerned with Lindenstrauss type theorems for spaces of polynomials and holomorphic functions. Using similar techniques as in [\textit{D. Carando} et al., J. Funct. Anal. 263, No. 7, 1809--1824 (2012; Zbl 1258.46017)], the authors prove that the set of all continuous polynomials of degree at most \(k\) from \(X\) to \(Y'\) whose Aron-Berner extensions attain their norms is dense whenever \(X'\) is separable and has the approximation property. As a consequence, it is also proved under the same conditions that the set of all functions in \(\mathcal A_u(X;Y')\) whose Aron-Berner extensions attain their norms is dense in \(\mathcal A_u(X;Y')\). These results are transferred to operators with values in a Banach space \(Y\) that satisfies property \((\beta)\). The paper ends with some counterexamples to the Bishop-Phelps theorem for scalar or vector valued continuous polynomials or for \(\mathcal A_u(X;Y)\) but for which the above results hold, and with strong variants of the Bishop-Phelps and Lindenstrauss theorems.
