The immanant of a matrix was introduced by \textit{D. E. Littlewood} and \textit{A. R. Richardson} [``Group characters and algebras'', Philos. Trans. R. Soc. Lond., Ser. A 233, No. 722, 99--141 (1934; \url{doi:10.1098/rsta.1934.0015})] as a generalization of the concepts of determinant and permanent. The main purpose of this paper is the extension of the concept of immanant to split quaternion algebras, using the theory of row and column determinants developed by the author in two earlier papers. This theory over the quaternion skew field is being actively developed by the author and others (H. X. Chang, G. J. Song, Q. W. Wang). In the final section, the author introduces an immanant of a Hermitian matrix over a split quaternion algebra.
