The paper deals with the study of periodic solutions and chaotic dynamics for a Poincaré map associated to a three-dimensional flow of the form \[ \dot{x}=F(t,x), \] where \(F\) is a vector field period with respect to the variable \(t.\) The presence of a topological horseshoe is proven which implies the existence of an infinite number of periodic points and complex dynamics. The general results are exemplified on a Lotka-Volterra system.
