There are several tools used in the analysis of the structure of Morse decompositions of invariant sets in the Conley theory, like connection matrices, connection graphs and spectral sequences. The main goal of the paper is to discuss basic relations between connection matrices, connection graphs and spectral sequences on the algebraic level. Two new notions of spectral splitting and spectral graph are introduced. They are variants of detailed connection matrices and connection graphs, considered in earlier papers of the author. They both fit to the construction of a spectral sequence for a filtered differential vector space. In fact one can reconstruct each one from the other. They can provide an information on the existence of connecting orbits or sequences of orbits between different Morse sets. Simple examples are provided.
