Consider the compound KdV-Burgers equation \[ u_t+ auu_x+ bu^2u_x+ ru_{xx}+\beta u_{xxx}= 0,\tag{\(*\)} \] where \(a\), \(b\), \(r\), \(\beta\) are scalar coefficients satisfying \(b>0\), \(\beta>0\), \(r\leq 0\). \(r\) and \(\beta\) are related to dissipation and dispersion, respectively. The authors look for bounded traveling wave solutions \(u(x,t)= u(x-vt)\) with wave speed \(v\). This leads to a second-order nonlinear ordinary differential equation depending on some parameters. Firstly, the authors study the global phase portrait in dependence on the parameters. Then they determine all possible explicit bell profile solitary wave solutions of \((*)\) in case \(r=0\). Further, they construct approximate damped oscillatory solutions in case \(r<0\). In the final section, the authors estimate the error between the exact damped oscillatory solution and the approximate solution.
