Dynamical systems on manifolds with first integrals are considered. The main aim is to propose numerical integrators which preserve the manifold structure as well as the first integrals. In general, two main approaches are possible. In the first approach, one should carefully select numerical methods which automatically preserve the invariants. Alternatively, by using the idea of feedback control, one first modifies the dynamics appropriately and then solve the modified system by any popular numerical method like Runge-Kutta methods. In this paper, the authors follow the latter approach. The equation is modified by adding the negative gradient of an appropriately chosen function which involves the state. By LaSalle's invariance principle, it is shown that the modified dynamics yields trajectories that stably remain on the manifold and preserve the first integrals. The method is illustrated in three well-known problems: the free rigid body, the Kepler problem, and a perturbed Kepler problem with a rotational symmetry. Numerical experiments are carried out and the method is compared with other methods such as the standard projection method, a splitting method, and Störmer-Verlet schemes.
