    Let \(\mathcal{A}^{*} \) (resp. \(\mathcal{M}^{*}\)) be the class of completely additive (resp. multiplicative) arithmetical functions taking real values. According to a theorem of \textit{E. Wirsing} et al. [J. Number Theory 56, No. 2, 391--395 (1996; Zbl 0845.11030)], if \(f\) is a complex-valued multiplicative function and \(f(n + 1) - f(n) \to 0\) \((n\to\infty)\), then either \(f(n)\to 0\) \((n\to\infty)\) or \(f(n) = n^s\), \(0\leq\text{Re}\,s < 1\). There are several generalizations of this theorem. The following results have been proved in this paper. Let \(\varepsilon(n) \downarrow 0\). Assume that \(\sum^{\infty}_{n=2}\frac{\varepsilon (n) \log \log(2n)}{n} < \infty \). Let \(f, g \in\mathcal{M}^{*} \), \(C \in \mathbb{C}\), \(| f(n)| = | g(n)| = 1\) \((n \in \mathbb{N})\) and \(\left| g([\sqrt{2}n])-Cf(n)\right| \leq \varepsilon(n)\) \((n \in \mathbb{N})\). Then \(f(n) = g(n) = n^{i\tau}\) \((\tau \in \mathbb{R})\), where \(C =(\sqrt{2})^{i\tau}\). Further, let \( C \neq 0\) and \(\sum^{\infty}_{n=1}\frac{\left| g([\sqrt{2}n])-Cf(n)\right|}{n} < \infty \). Then \(f(n) = g(n)\) \((n \in \mathbb{N})\). Moreover, \( C^{2} = f(2)\). The main lemma used to prove these results is due to \textit{I. Kátai} [Acta Math. Hung. 43, 105--130 (1984; Zbl 0532.10004)] and it states that if \(f \in \mathcal{M}^{*}\), \(| f(n)| =1\) \((n \in \mathbb{N})\) and \(\sum^{\infty}_{n=1}\frac{| f(n+1)-f(n)|}{n} < \infty \) then \(f(n) = n^{i\tau}\) \((\tau \in \mathbb{R})\). For Part II, see Acta Sci. Math. 81, No. 3-4, 431--436 (2015; Zbl 1374.11076).
