The paper centers around a notion of monotonicity in metric spaces: if \(c\) is a positive real number then a metric space \((X,d)\) is said to be \(c\)-monotone if there is a linear order \(\prec\) on \(X\) such that \(d(x,y)\leq c\cdot d(x,z)\) whenever \(x\prec y\prec z\). The principal result of the paper states that for every positive \(c\) there is a Cantor set, \(A\), in the plane such that every \(c\)-monotone subset of \(A\) has Hausdorff dimension strictly less than that of \(A\) itself (which can always be taken to be \(1\over 3\)).
