For a~connected, compact, oriented manifold \(M\) with boundary, the simplicial volume \(||M,\partial M||\) is the infimum of the sum of the absolute values of the coefficients over all singular chains representing the real fundamental cycle of \(M\). In [\textit{D. Jungreis}, Ergodic Theory Dyn. Syst. 17, No. 3, 643--648 (1997; Zbl 0882.57009)] the author proved that, if \(M\) is an \(n\)-dimensional hyperbolic manifold with nonempty geodesic boundary with \(n\geq 3\), then \[ ||M,\partial M|| > \dfrac{\text{Vol}(M)}{v_n} \] where \(\text{Vol}(M)\) is the Riemannian volume of \(M\) and \(v_n\) is the volume of the regular ideal geodesic \(n\)-simplex in hyperbolic space. The main goal of the paper is to prove the more precise result (see Theorem 1): If \(n\geq 4\), then there exists a positive constant \(\eta_n\) depending only on \(n\) and such that, for all hyperbolic \(n\)-manifolds \(M\) with nonempty geodesic boundary, the following inequality holds: \[ \dfrac{||M,\partial M||}{\text{Vol}(M)} \geq \dfrac{1}{v_n} +\eta_n \dfrac{\text{Vol}(\partial M)}{\text{Vol}(M)}. \] Moreover, the same problem for 3-dimensional hyperbolic manifolds is considered (see Theorem 3).
