A compact, translation surface \(\mathfrak{M}\) is a finite union of Euclidean polygons such that: (1) the boundary of every polygon is oriented so that the polygon lies to the left; (2) there is an identification between oriented sides such that the sides identified are parallel and of the same length. At each vertex \(x_{i}\) of \(\mathfrak{M}, 1 \leq i \leq n\), there is a cone angle of magnitude \(2 \pi(d_{i} + 1)\), where \(d_{i}\) is a nonnegative integer. The integers \(\{ d_{i}\}\) satisfy the condition \(\sum_{i=1}^{n} (d_{i} + 1) = 2g - 2 +n\), where g is the genus of \(\mathfrak{M}\). Let \(\mathfrak{H}(d_{1}, \dots , d_{n})\) denote the collection of all compact, translation surfaces with n singularities of cone angles \(2 \pi(d_{1} + 1), \dots , 2 \pi (d_{n} + 1)\). By convention the integers \(\{d_{i} \}\) are ordered so that \(d_{i+1} \leq d_{i}\) for all \(i\). Let \(\mathfrak{M}\) be a compact, translation surface and consider a collection of cuts \(\{\gamma_{1}^{\pm}, \dots , \gamma_{N}^{\pm} \}\) on \(\mathfrak{M}\), where the \(\{\gamma_{i}^{\pm} \}\) are line segments such that \(\gamma_{i}^{+}\) and \(\gamma_{i}^{-}\) are parallel and of the same length for all \(i\). Now let \(G\) be a locally compact abelian group with a translation invariant metric and let \(\{g_{1}, \dots , g_{N} \}\) be any subset of \(G\). Using the cuts \(\{\gamma_{i}^{\pm}\}\) and the elements \(\{g_{i} \}\) the straight line geodesic flow \(\varphi_{t}^{\theta}\) on \(\mathfrak{M}\) in a direction \(\theta \in S^{1}\) extends to a flow \(\{\tilde{\varphi}_{t}^{\theta} \}\) on \(\mathfrak{M} \times G\). If \(\mu\) denotes the Euclidean induced Lebesgue measure on \(\mathfrak{M}\) and \(\nu\) denotes the Haar measure on \(G\), then \(\{\tilde{\varphi}_{t}^{\theta} \}\) preserves the product measure \(\mu \times \nu\) on \(\mathfrak{M} \times G\). The main result of the article is that in each stratum \(\mathfrak{H}(d_{1}, \dots , d_{n})\) there is a dense \(G_{\delta}\) subset of \(\mathfrak{H}(d_{1}, \dots , d_{n})\) consisting of compact, translation surfaces \(\mathfrak{M}\) for which the flow \(\{\tilde{\varphi}_{t}^{\theta} \}\) on \(\mathfrak{M} \times G\) is ergodic in almost every direction \(\theta\) for almost every collection \(\{\gamma_{1}^{\pm}, \dots , \gamma_{N}^{\pm} \}\) of cuts and every subset \(\{g_{1}, \dots , g_{N} \}\) of \(G\) that generates a dense subgroup of \(G\).
