Aronhold's classical result [\textit{S. H. Aronhold}, Berl. Monatsber. 1864, 499--523 (1864; Zbl 1365.14043)] states that a plane quartic can be recovered by the configuration of some special bitangents. In [J. Algebr. Geom. 12, No. 2, 225--244 (2003; Zbl 1080.14523)], \textit{L. Caporaso} and \textit{E. Sernesi} proved that the general plane quartic is uniquely determined by its 28 bitangents [\textit{D. Lehavi}, Isr. J. Math. 146, 371--379 (2005; Zbl 1076.14037)]. More recently Plaumann, Sturmfels and Vinzant defined an \(8\times8\) symmetric matrix that parametrizes the bitangents of a nonsingular plane quartic [\textit{D. Plaumann} et al., J. Symb. Comput. 46, No. 6, 712--733 (2011; Zbl 1214.14049)]. In the present paper the authors study the inverse problem, that is, starting with the \(28\) bitangents of the plane quartic to construct the bitangent matrix. Furthermore, they provide a Sage script to compute the bitangent matrix.
