In this paper, it is proved that the HOMFLYPT skein algebra \(H\) of the torus \(T^2\) is isomorphic to the \(\sigma=\overline{\sigma}^{-1}\) specialization of the elliptic Hall algebra of \textit{I. Burban} and \textit{O. Schiffmann} [Duke Math. J. 161, No. 7, 1171--1231 (2012; Zbl 1286.16029)]. The authors give a presentation of \(H\) by generators and relations and applying this presentation prove the above result. Applications for iterated cable \(K\) of the unknot are given: the elliptic Hall algebra is used to construct a \(3\)-variable polynomial that specializes to the \(\lambda\)-colored HOMFLYPT polynomial of \(K\). Moreover, one of \textit{I. Cherednik} and \textit{I. Danilenko} [Algebr. Geom. Topol. 16, No. 2, 843--898 (2016; Zbl 1375.14099)] connection conjectures is proved: the authors show that constructed polynomial also specializes to one constructed by Cherednik and Danilenko [loc. cit.] using the \(\mathfrak{gl}_N\) double affine Hecke algebra.
