Let \(X\) be a Banach space and let \((\Omega, \Sigma,\mu)\) be a probability space. In this paper, the author studies the classical problem of identifying weakly compact sets in the Lebesgue-Bochner function space \(L^1(\mu,X)\). A classical result of \textit{J. Diestel} [Glasg. Math. J. 18, 87--91 (1977; Zbl 0342.46020)] says that any uniformly integrable set \(K \subset L^1(\mu,X)\) such that for any \(\delta >0\), there is a weakly compact set \(W \subset X\) such that \(\mu(f^{-1}(W))\geq 1-\delta\) for all \(f \in K\) (called \(\delta{\mathcal S}\)-set) is relatively weakly compact. In this paper, the author obtains a Grothendieck-type stability result by showing that, if \(K \subset L^1(\mu,X)\) is such that, for any \(\epsilon >0\), there is a \(\delta{\mathcal S}\)-set \(K_{\epsilon} \subset L^1(\mu,X)\) such that \(K \subset K_{\epsilon}+ \epsilon B_{L^1(\mu,X)}\), then \(K\) is a \(\delta{\mathcal S}\)-set.
