For smooth manifolds, the notion of a smooth submanifold is well understood and it is a theorem that submanifolds are precisely the images of smooth embeddings. For orbifolds, the corresponding result is not true. That is, there are reasonable notions of suborbifold and orbifold embedding that lead to the curious phenomenon that there are suborbifolds that do not arise as images of orbifold embeddings. This was first observed by \textit{V. Brunsden} and the reviewer in [Algebr. Geom. Topol. 15, No. 5, 2789--2803 (2015; Zbl 1330.57039)]. In that paper, the authors give a characterization of those suborbifolds that arise as the images of orbifold embeddings. In the article under under review, the author takes an alternative and more comprehensive approach to the notion of suborbifold and orbifold embedding. In addition to relating this new approach to the existing work of Brunsden and the reviewer, the author extends his approach to global quotients by Lie groups. The author also proves transversality results that generalize an orbifold regular value theorem which appeared in [\textit{J. E. Borzellino} and \textit{V. Brunsden}, Topology Appl. 159, No. 17, 3583--3589 (2012; Zbl 1261.57024)]. This article also serves to fill in some important missing details in the existing orbifold literature.
