The authors study the spectral problem for the Dirichlet Laplacian in the perforated plane, where the holes are given by infinitely many copies of the same bounded, smooth domain, being ordered periodically along an infinite or semi-infinite lattice. They focus particularly on the semi-infinite case where the Floquet--Bloch technique and the Gelfand transform do not apply directly. Waves which are localized near the inclusion and propagate along it are studied and radiation conditions are provided such that the semi-infinite problem gives rise to a Fredholm operator with index zero. Moreover, spectral inclusions between the infinite and the semi-infinite problem and the existence of trapped modes (eigenfunctions decaying exponentially in all directions) are investigated.
