The paper is set within the framework of nonlinear stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) driven by a space-time white noise. Prototype examples are provided by various generalizations of the KPZ equation. The generic problem with such equations is that in general, to become well-posed, they require renormalization. Typically, it is the noise term that is properly regularized by introducing its suitable cutoff (mollified) version. Next, the nonlinear and possibly non-local solution-dependent entry in the KPZ-like equation is modified additively by a singular counter-term. At present, there are three methods to tackle problems of well-posedness of subcritical SPDEs: the method of para-controlled distributions [\textit{M. Gubinelli} et al., Forum Math. Pi 3, Article ID e6, 75 p. (2015; Zbl 1333.60149)], the method based on regularity structures [\textit{M. Hairer}, Invent. Math. 198, No. 2, 269--504 (2014; Zbl 1332.60093)] and the renormalization group (RG) method [the first author, Ann. Henri Poincaré 17, No. 3, 497--535 (2016; Zbl 1347.81063)] that is used in the present paper. The latter is adopted to the analysis of the stochastic hydrodynamics model due to \textit{H. Spohn} [J. Stat. Phys. 154, No. 5, 1191--1227 (2014; Zbl 1291.82119)]. The RG methods are used to prove the well-posedness for the generalized KPZ equation, suitable for the stochastic hydrodynamics modeling. The counterterms are specified, suitable scaling limits are analyzed and the renormalization parameter which gives rise to (a controlled convergence to) a unique solution of the singular equation is deduced.
