Let \(R\) be a commutative Noetherian ring and \(M\) a finitely generated \(R\)-module. \textit{M. Auslander, S. Ding} and \textit{Ø. Solberg} [J. Algebra 156, No. 2, 273--317 (1993; Zbl 0778.13007)] gave the following commutative version of the Auslander-Reiten conjecture: If \(\text{Ext}_R^i(M,M)=0=\text{Ext}_R^i(M,R)\) for all \(i>0\), then \(M\) is projective. Christensen and Holm showed that the Auslander-Reiten conjecture follows from the Auslander conjecture. In [Adv. Math. 188, No. 2, 470--490 (2004; Zbl 1090.13009)], \textit{D. A. Jorgensen} and \textit{L. M. Şega} found counterexamples for the Auslander conjecture. The author proves that the Auslander-Reiten conjecture is true in the cases when the Auslander conjecture fails. More precisely, it is shown that if \(R\) is an Artinian standard graded algebra and \(M\) a finitely generated \(R\)-module generated in one degree, then \(\text{Ext}_R^i(M,M)=0=\text{Ext}_R^i(M,R)\) for all \(i>0\) implies \(M\) is free. Moreover, if \((R,\mathfrak m,k)\) is a local Gorenstein ring with \(\mathfrak m^4=0\) such that there exists a nonzero element \(a\in\mathfrak m\) with \((0:_Ra)\) principal and \(M\) is a finitely generated \(R\)-module, then the Auslander-Reiten conjecture holds.
