The notions of Lusin cotype and type were introduced by \textit{Q.-H. Xu} [``Littlewood-Paley theory for functions with values in uniformly convex spaces.'' J. Reine Angew. Math. 504, 195--226 (1998; Zbl 0904.42016)] and correspond to the validity of each of the inequalities appearing in the equivalence between the \(L^p\)-norms of a function and its Littlewood-Paley \(g\)-function. Namely, for \(1<q<\infty\) and \(f\in L^1(\mathbb T, B)\), where \(B\) is a Banach space, the modified Littlewood-Paley \(g\)-function \(g_q(f)\) is given by \[ g_q(f)(z)=\bigg(\int_0^1 (1-r)^q\bigg\|\frac{\partial P_r}{\partial r}*f(z)\bigg\|^q\frac{dr}{1-r}\bigg)^{1/q}, \] where \(P_r\) stands for the Poisson kernel of the unit disk. The Banach space \(B\) is said to have Lusin cotype \(q\) (for \(q\geq 2\)) (resp., Lusin type \(q\), for \(1\leq q\leq 2\)) if there exists \(C\) such that, for some \(1<p<\infty\), \(\|g_q(f)\|_{L^p(\mathbb T,B)}\leq C\|f\|_{L^p(\mathbb T,B)}\) (resp., \(\|f\|_{L^p(\mathbb T,B)}\leq C(\|\hat f(0)\|+\|g_q(f)\|_{L^p(\mathbb T,B)}.\)) It was shown by \textit{T. Martínez, J. L. Torrea} and \textit{Q.-H. Xu} [``Vector-valued Littlewood-Paley-Stein theory for semigroups.'' Adv. Math. 203, No. 2, 430--475 (2006; Zbl 1111.46008)] that Lusin type and cotype can be described using the subordinated Poisson semigroups \((P_t)\) of general symmetric diffusion markovian semigroups \((T_t)\). The paper is devoted to show that actually these notions can be described using Littlewood-Paley \(g\)-functions for Poisson semigroups associated to the Hermite and Laguerre differential operators (which are not Markovian). The authors consider the Hermite differential operator \(H=-\frac{1}{2}(\frac{d^2}{dx^2}-x^2)\), denote by \((W^H_t)\) the heat operator generated by \(-H\) and by \((P_t^H)\) the subordinated Poisson semigroup. A new \(g\)-function of a vector-valued function is then introduced by the formula \[ g_q^H(f)(x)= \bigg(\int_{-\infty}^\infty \bigg\|t\frac{\partial}{\partial t}\,P^H_t(f)(x)\bigg\|^q\frac{dt}{t}\bigg)^{1/q}. \] A similar procedure is applied to the Laguerre differential operator, for \(\alpha>-1\), \(L_\alpha=\frac{1}{2}(-\frac{d^2}{dy^2}+ y^2+ \frac{1}{y^2}(\alpha^2-\frac{1}{4}))\), obtaining \(g_q^\alpha(f)\) in a similar fashion. The main results of the paper establish that \(B\) has Lusin cotype \(q\) for some \(q\geq 2\) if, for some (and equivalently for all) \(1<p<\infty\), the operator \(g^H_q\) is bounded on \(L^p(\mathbb R, B)\). Also, they find an interval \(I_\alpha\) depending on the values of \(\alpha>-1\) such that the Lusin cotype can be described by the boundedness of \(g_q^\alpha\) on \(L^p((0,\infty),B)\) for some (or for all) \(p\in I_\alpha\). The counterparts for Lusin type are also provided.
