This book is devoted to a comprehensive treatment of sliding mode control methods applied to fault detection and fault tolerant control. Chapters 1 and 2 present an overview of fault tolerant control and fault detection. In Chapter 3 a brief introduction to sliding mode control techniques is considered. Chapters 4 and 5 provide the sliding mode approach applied to the problem of observers design and the limitations needed to apply observer schemes. In Chapter 6 sensor faults are considered, in Chapter 7 real-time implementations of the sensor faults reconstruction schemes are examined. Chapter 8 presents a new sliding mode scheme for reconfigurable control, with application to a benchmark aircraft problem. Chapter 9 proposes an online sliding mode control allocation scheme for fault tolerant control, whose implementation is described in Chapter 11 on the 6-DOF research flight simulator SIMONA. Chapter 10 presents an adaptive model reference sliding mode fault tolerant control scheme. Piloted flight simulator results are reported on in Chapter 12 with the EL~AL flight 1862, showing advantages of the proposed sliding mode control scheme. This monograph is a substantial and impressive contribution to sliding mode control applications, blending rigorous theoretical developments with effective applications to aircraft control problems under critical conditions.
