The authors present a study of a full hybrid vehicle, with a classical off-line optimization tool, and with an example of real-time control strategy. A simple model in Matlab has been implemented and coupled with a dynamic programming algorithm. By using this model, an engine startup cost \(L_2\) has been introduced in the optimal control problem, thanks to a discrete variable \(x_2\), to take into account the extra fuel consumption of the engine in order to reach its idle speed. The penalization term in the cost function avoids many successive engine stops and starts, and is not usually considered in this kind of optimal control problems. Off-line optimization results and equivalent consumption minimization strategy are compared for a realistic hybrid vehicle.
