A Lie algebra \(L\) is called locally simple if any finite subset of \(L\) is contained in a simple finite-dimensional Lie subalgebra. A locally simple Lie algebra of countable dimension \(L\) is called diagonal if there exists an increasing sequence of finite-dimensional simple subalgebras \(L_1 \subset L_ 2 \subset\dots\) such that \(L=\bigcup L_ i\) and all embeddings \(L_i \subset L_{i+1}\) are diagonal. An embedding \(L_i \subset L_j \) is called diagonal if for each \(l\) any nontrivial composition factor of the restriction \(V_j^l \downarrow L_i \) is isomorphic to \(V^k _i\) or its dual \(V^{*k}_ i\) for some \(k\). Infinite-dimensional diagonal locally-simple Lie algebras are thoroughly studied in [\textit{A. A. Baranov} and \textit{A. G. Zhilinskii}, Commun. Algebra 27, No. 6, 2749--2766 (1999; Zbl 0931.17016)], where it is proven that the only infinite-dimensional diagonal locally-simple complex Lie algebras as diagonal direct limits of simple Lie algebras are \(\mathfrak{sl}(\infty)\), \(\mathfrak{so}(\infty)\) or \(\mathfrak{sp}(\infty)\). All locally semisimple and maximal subalgebras of these finitary Lie algebras were determined in [\textit{I. Dimitrov} and \textit{I. Penkov}, J. Algebra 322, No. 6, 2069--2081 (2009; Zbl 1250.17030)]. The present paper under review determines, up to isomorphism, all simple subalgebras of diagonal locally simple Lie algebras.
