For \(x>0,\) let \(PW_x\) be the classical Paley-Wiener space of entire functions (on the plane) of exponential type at most \(x\). For a finite sequence \(\sigma = (z_1,\dots,z_n )\) of purely imaginary numbers, the subspace \(PW_x(\sigma)\) of all functions in \(PW_x\) vanishing at these points is considered. The reproducing kernel for this Hilbert space is computed and connections with Krein differential systems are examined. The author calls the coefficient function of this differential system the \(\mu\)-function. In the case when \(\sigma\) is an arithmetic progression, the main result relates this space to Painlevé differential equations: certain quotients of the \(\mu\)-functions associated to these spaces obey Painlevé VI differential equations.
