Let \(K\) be a global field, \(K(\!(t)\!)\) the Laurent formal power series field in an indeterminate \(t\) over \(K\), \(K_{\text{sep}}\) a separable closure of \(K\), and \(\mathcal G_K\) the absolute Galois group of \(K\) (i.e., the Galois group \(\mathcal G(K_{\text{sep}}/K)\)). Denote by \(\chi(\mathcal G_K)\) the continuous character group \(\Hom_c(\mathcal G_K,\mathbb Q/\mathbb Z)\) (as usual, \(\mathcal G_K\) is viewed as a profinite group with respect to the Krull topology, and \(\mathbb Q/\mathbb Z\) is endowed with the discrete topology). It is well-known that \(\chi(\mathcal G_K)\) is an Abelian torsion group. As shown by \textit{E. S. Brussel} [see Am. J. Math. 117, No. 2, 377-393 (1995; Zbl 0822.16013); Manuscr. Math. 107, No. 3, 343-353 (2002; Zbl 1009.16019)], there exist (finite-dimensional) central division \(K(\!(t)\!)\)-algebras that are noncrossed products. The paper under review classifies those Brauer classes over \(K(\!(t)\!)\), which contain noncrossed products and lie in the tame part \(\text{Br}(K(\!(t)\!)))'\) of the Brauer group \(\text{Br}(K(\!(t)\!))\). The classification relies on the existence of a canonical embedding, depending on \(t\), of the direct sum \(\text{Br}(K)\otimes\chi(K)\) into \(\text{Br}(K(\!(t)\!))\), whose image equals \(\text{Br}(K(\!(t)\!))'\). For each character \(\chi\in\chi(\mathcal G_K)\) and any integer \(m\geq 0\), denote by \(\text{Br}(\chi,m)\) the set of those elements of the coset \(\chi+\text{Br}(K)\), whose order equals \(|\chi|m\), where \(|\chi|\) is the order of \(\chi\). The main result of the paper shows that \(\text{Br}(\chi,m)\) is subject to the following alternative: (i) every division \(K(\!(t)\!)\)-algebra representing an element of \(\text{Br}(\chi,m)\) is a crossed product; (ii) \(\text{Br}(\chi,m)\) contains infinitely many elements which are represented by noncrossed product division algebras. The validity of each condition is ruled by a relation between the number of roots of unity in \(K\) and invariants of the fixed field \(K(\chi)\) of the kernel of \(\chi\). As a consequence of the obtained result, the authors prove that there are crossed products that possess a noncrossed product primary component.
