    E. Calabi proposed to deform a given Kähler metric in direction of the Levi-Hessian of its scalar curvature. This is a fourth-order fully nonlinear semiparabolic equation aiming to attack the existence of constant scalar curvature Kähler metric in a given Kähler class. Note that constant scalar curvature Kähler metrics are the fixed points while extremal Kähler metrics are soliton solutions of the Calabi flow. Inspired by recent studies of S. K. Donaldson on constant scalar curvature metrics on toric complex surfaces, the author studies obstructions to the extension of the Calabi flow on a polarized toric variety. Under some technical assumptions, he proves that the Calabi flow can be extended for all times.
