Let \(H\) be a semisimple Hopf algebra over an algebraically closed field \(k\) of characteristic zero. A Hopf subalgebra of \(H\) is called normal if it is stable under the (left) adjoint action of \(H\). In this paper, the authors study the ring obtained as the image of the restriction map from the Grothendieck ring of \(H\) to that of a normal Hopf subalgebra \(K\). They consider the case where \(K\) is commutative, that is, \(K\simeq k^G\), for some finite group \(G\). The cases where \(G=\mathbb Z_p\), \(\mathbb Z_{p^n}\) are discussed in detail. As an application, the authors give a complete description of the Grothendieck ring of the non-group-theoretical semisimple Hopf algebra of dimension \(4p^2\) constructed by \textit{D. Nikshych} [in Sel. Math., New Ser. 14, No. 1, 145-161 (2008; Zbl 1177.16019)].
