Let \(E\) be a closed subspace of a Banach space \(X\). Let \(\lambda \geq 1\) and let \(\mathcal{A}\) be some class of ordered Banach spaces. The pair \((E,X)\) is said to have the \((\lambda,\mathcal{A})\)-linear extension property if for each \(A \in \mathcal{A}\) and each linear \(T: E \to A\) there exists a linear extension \(\hat{T}: X \to A\) with \(\|\hat{T}\| \leq \lambda \|T\|\). In addition, \(X\) has the \((\lambda,\mathcal{A})\)-linear extension property if every pair \((E,X)\) has this property. The article treats four classes: the class \(\mathcal{C}\) of \(C(K)\) spaces, the class \(\mathcal{L}\) of Lindenstrauss spaces and the classes of separable such spaces \(\mathcal{C}_s\) and \(\mathcal{L}_s\). The extension of sublinear operators is also studied using multivalued mappings. It is, for example, shown that a pair \((E,X)\) has the \((\lambda,\mathcal{L})\)-linear extension property if and only if there exists a weakly\(^*\)-weakly\(^*\) continuous affine mapping \(\psi: B_{E^*} \to \lambda B_{X^*}\) such that \(\psi(e^*)(e) = e^*(e)\) for all \(e \in E\) and \(e^* \in B_{E^*}\) with \(\psi(0) = 0\). This solves a problem of \textit{J. M. F. Castillo} and \textit{J. Suárez} [Isr. J. Math. 169, 1--27 (2009; Zbl 1165.46003)] and is similar to Zippin's result for the class \(\mathcal{C}\). It is also shown that if \(X\) is separable both the \((\lambda,\mathcal{C})\)-linear extension property and the \((\lambda,\mathcal{C})\)-sublinear extension property implies the other. A similar result is also shown for the three other classes mentioned above. Reviewer's remark: On page 1064 in the paper, it is claimed that the even map \(e^*\mapsto\frac{\varphi(e^*)+\varphi(-e^*)}{2}\) extends functionals whenever \(\varphi\) does. As far as I can tell, this map sends \(B_{E^*}\) into \(E^\perp\) and thus cannot extend functionals.
