The present paper characterizes compactness of the \(\overline{\partial}\)-Neumann operator on \((0,1)\)-forms for smoothly bounded pseudoconvex domains and in the setting of weighted \(L^2\)-spaces on \(\mathbb{C}^n\) by putting together some well-known tools. The key ingredient is the functional analytic characterization of relatively compact subsets in \(L^2\)-spaces. By use of this criterion, one can see immediately that Catlin's property \((P)\) or McNeal's property \((\widetilde{P})\) imply compactness of the \(\overline{\partial}\)-Neumann operator on a smoothly bounded pseudoconvex domain.
