This paper is devoted to the study of the class of Ricci type symmetric symplectic spaces, i.e., spaces such that the curvature tensor of the canonical connection is of Ricci type. Connected Ricci type symmetric symplectic spaces of dimension \(2n\) (\(n\geq 2\)) are quotients of the connected component of the universal covering of model manifolds \(M_A\) obtained by reduction in the following way: Let \(({\mathbb R}^{2(n+1)},\Omega)\) be the standard symplectic vector space. Let \(A\) be a non-zero element of the symplectic Lie algebra \(\mathfrak{sp}({\mathbb R}^{2(n+1)},\Omega)\), such that \(A^2=\mu\operatorname{Id}\) and \(\Sigma_A=\{x\in {\mathbb R}^{2(n+1)}\mid \Omega(x,Ax)=1\}\not=\emptyset\). Then \(\Sigma_A\) is invariant under the one-parameter group \(\{\exp tA\}\) and the quotient manifold \(M_A=\Sigma_A/\{\exp tA\}\) has a natural ``reduced'' symmetric symplectic space structure. The main result of the paper is the characterization, in a large number of cases, of connected Ricci type symmetric symplectic manifolds admitting a simply transitive subgroup of transvections in terms of the characteristic element \(A\). Theorem. Let \(0\not= A\in\mathfrak{sp}({\mathbb R}^{2(n+1)},\Omega)\) be such that \(\Sigma_a\not=\emptyset\) and \(A^2=\mu\operatorname{Id}\). (1) If \(\mu>0\), the space \(M_A\) is diffeomorphic to \(TS^n\) (the tangent bundle to the unit \(n\)-sphere) and never admits a simply transitive subgroup of the transvection group. (2) If \(\mu< 0\), the symmetric bilinear form \(g(X,Y):=\Omega(X,AY)\) has \(2p\) positive eigenvalues with \(1\leq p\leq n+1\); the symmetric space \(M_A\) is connected and simply connected; it is diffemorphic to \({\mathbb C}^n\) if \(p=1\) and to a complex vector bundle of rank \(n+1-p\) over \({\mathbb P}^{p-1}({\mathbb C})\) if \(p>1\). It admits a simply transitive subgroup of the transvection group if and only if \(p=1\); non-isomorphic simply transitive subgroups arise in this case. (3) If \(\mu=0\), let \(p\) (\(1\leq p\leq n+1\)) be the rank of \(A\), and let \(q\) (\(1\leq q \leq p\)) be the number of positive eigenvalues of the symmetric bilinear form \(g(X,Y):=\Omega(X,AY)\). The symmetric space \(M_A\) is diffeomorphic to \(T(S^{q-1}\times {\mathbb R}^{p-q})\times {\mathbb R}^{2(n+1-p)}\). If \(p=1\), each of the two connected components of \(M_A\) is diffeomorphic to the flat symplectic vector space and, hence, admits a simply transitive subgroup of the transvection group. If \(p=2\), then \(M_A\) admits a simply transitive subgroup of the transvection group if and only if \(q=1\). If \(q\not=1,2,4\), then \(M_A\) does not admit a simply transitive subgroup of the transvection group. In all cases under consideration, the simply transitive subgroups which arise are one-dimensional extensions of the Heisenberg group of dimension \(2n-1\).
