The classical two dimensional linear Fredholm integral equation is considered \[ \phi(x,t)-\int\limits_{c}^{d}\int\limits_{a}^{b}K(x,t,y,z)\phi(y,z)dydz=f(x,t), \quad x\in[a,b], \quad t\in[c,d], \] where \(K(x,t,y,z)\) and \(f(x,t)\) are polynomials or can be approximated by suitable polynomials. The operational tau method for this equation is formulated and some theoretical results are given to simplify its application. The authors also investigate the existence and the uniqueness of the solution and estimate the error of the proposed method. In conclusion some numerical examples are given.
