Let \(q = 2^e \geq 64\) with even \(e\). \textit{W. E. Cherowitzo, C. M. O'Keefe}, and \textit{T. Penttila} [Adv. Geom. 3, 1-21 (2003; Zbl 1022.51007)] discovered a new family of ovals, the Adelaide ovals, in the finite projective planes \(PG(2,q)\). The authors of the paper under review show that the absolutely irreducible curve \(C\) in \(PG(2,q)\) defined by the homogeneous polynomial \((x^4 + z^4)(x^2 + \delta xy + y^2) +\delta^2 z^6\) has the unique singular point \(S=(0,1,0)\), and that \(C\setminus \{ S \}\) is the Adelaide oval in \(PG(2,q)\) (with nucleus \((0,0,1)\)); here \(\delta = \beta + \beta^{-1}\) and \(\beta \in GF(q^2)\) has order \(q+1\). The stabilizer of the Adelaide oval in the group \(P\Gamma L(3,q)\) turns out to be the cyclic group of order \(2e\) described in loc. cit. Moreover, the authors show that the Adelaide hyperoval and the Subiaco hyperoval are distinct.
