PARLE, the conference on Parallel Architectures and Languages was organized within the boundaries of the project 415 of ESPRIT (the European Strategic Program for Research and Development in Information Technology). The program of the conference consisted of five invited lectures and 44 initiative papers on important and actual problems of parallel programming and architecture of current multiprocessors. This paper deals with the first volume of the Proceedings of PARLE, containing the problems of development of parallel architectures within the framework of the project ESPRIT. There is a number of papers from USA, Canada, from some West-European countries. Mathematical models of highly-parallel architectures and processes, problems of learning recognition in networks, interaction of processes with computer environment made with the use of trace theory apparatus are considered in this volume. Mathematical model of Boltzman machine is given, which combines features of neural networks and connectionist models: parallel architectures oriented to the realization of functional languages, efficient solution of the problem of deadlock and starvation in networks with different topology and size, results on the development in specification languages of the architecture of multiprocessors on the basis of axiomatic approach. Problems of computing on a systolic screen, organizationof data-flow computation in transputers, problems of routing in multidimensional structures, systolic design and layout of multiprocessors, mapping of some classes of processes into sets and multiprocessors, hardware memory management for large knowledge bases are examined. Methods of systolic arrays synthesis by their non-procedural descriptions, of pipeline imitation using parallel functional languages, of emulation of MIMD multiprocessors on transputer networks, of integration of logical and functional method of program development are suggested. Overviews of project developments of a parallel reduction machine, of inference machine, of multi-level simulator for VLSI, of the language of parallel object-oriented programming and corresponding multiprocessor are given. The Proceedings of PARLE are of certain interest for specialists in the field of design of architectures of current supercomputers and their software.
