(From the authors' abstract.) The elastic scattering problem, of a longitudinal or a transverse incident plane wave by a cavity, is investigated at a low-frequency limit. Lower bounds for the Rayleigh approximation of the forward scattering amplitudes are established in terms of the virtual mass tensor or other geometrical properties of the scatterer. For the case of longitudinal incidence, lower bounds in terms of the polarization tensor and the capacity are also given. Corresponding upper bounds are obtained for strongly star-shaped scatterers. Whenever the order of star-shapedness of the scatterer is greater than or equal to \(1/2\sqrt{3},\) a uniform bound with respect to the geometry of the scatterer can be constructed. A general method of obtaining upper bounds is also discussed although its effectiveness depends crucially upon the symmetries of the cavity.
