Let A(p) be the class of functions of the form \(f(z)=z^ p+a_{p+1}z^{p+1}+..\). which are analytic in the unit disc D. Such a function is called p-valently starlike if \[ Re[zf'(z)/f(z)]>0 \] for all \(z\in D\), p-valently covex if \[ 1+Re[zf''(z)/f'(z)]>0 \] in D, and p- valently close to convex if there is a p-valently starlike function g(z) such that \(Re[zf'(z)/g(z)]>0\) in D. The author proves some technical lemmas and obtains several consequences, for example it is shown that if \(f\in A(p)\) with \(p\leq 2\) and if \[ 1+Re[zf''(z)/f(z)]<p+1/4, \] then f is p-valently starlike. It is conjectured that this result remains true if the 1/4 in the hypothesis is replaced by 1/2.
