Diffeomorphism types of elliptic surfaces (Q5903031)

The author announces a classification of diffeomorphism types of some Kodaira elliptic surfaces. The elliptic surfaces in question satisfy the following conditions: No fiber contains an exceptional curve of the first kind; at least one singular fiber exists; there are no multiple singular fibers. By the main theorem, the diffeomorphism type of such an elliptic surface is completely determined by its Euler number and the genus of the base curve. This contrasts with a recent result of \textit{S. K. Donaldson} to the effect that some other elliptic surfaces lead to exotic differentiable structures [cf. C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris, Sér. I 301, 317-320 (1985)].
