Given a module \(M\), \(\sigma[M]\) is the class of modules subgenerated by \(M\). A module \(M\) is called extending if every submodule is essential in a direct summand. The authors prove that if \(M\) is a finitely generated module such that every finitely generated module in \(\sigma[M]\) is extending then \(M\) is Noetherian. In particular, the proof shows that a ring \(R\) is right Noetherian if every 2-generated right \(R\)-module is extending. The proof depends on a lemma of \textit{B. L. Osofsky} [Nagoya Math. J. 119, 107-114 (1990; Zbl 0699.16003)] which states that if \(M\) is a uniserial module with unique composition series \(M\supset U\supset V\supset 0\) then the module \(M\oplus(U/V)\) is not extending. The authors claim that their results can be used to prove, for a module \(M\), that every module in \(\sigma[M]\) is extending if every countably generated module in \(\sigma[M]\) is extending. All the results of this paper together with additional information can be found in a recent paper of \textit{N. Vanaja} [Commun. Algebra 24, No. 2, 543-572 (1996; Zbl 0847.16006)].
