The authors consider nonlinear Schrödinger equations having quite general nonlinearities -- including of Gross-Pitaevskii type and cubic-quintic type -- in at least two spatial dimensions, with nonzero boundary conditions. They consider the existence of traveling wave solutions, using minimization of the energy at fixed momentum when the nonlinear potential is non-negative, and also minimization of the action at constant kinetic energy. In addition, the relationship between the families of traveling waves obtained via different approaches is discussed.
