This article is a survey of the current status of the classification and enumeration of self-dual linear codes of small to moderate lengths over the fields \(\mathbb{F}_2\), \(\mathbb{F}_3\) and \(\mathbb{F}_4\) and the rings \(\mathbb{Z}_4\), \(\mathbb{F}_2+u\mathbb{F}_2\), and \(\mathbb{F}_2+v\mathbb{F}_2\). The theory of error-correcting codes is so extensive that no ones article can serve as an adequate survey. In this paper a small, but significant, portion of the discipline is examined. Self-duality is considered using a variety of inner products. Also, formally self-dual binary codes and additive self-dual codes are examined. The most important open problems for all type of codes are stated in the conclusion.
