Magnetorheological fluids (MR) are suspensions of micron-sized magnetizable particles in a nonmagnetic carrier fluid. When subjected to a moderate external magnetic field, they can rapidly and reversibly vary from the state of a Newtonian-like fluid to a semisolid state (the MR effect). Using a homogenization method, the paper presents a mathematical model for effective magnetic response of MR fluids with periodic microstructure. The presented numerical results exhibit a good agreement with experimental data.
